Camp Nurse New

The camp nurse is responsible for the health and well being of the entire camp community throughout the summer. There will be two resident nurses, a relief nurse who is on-call, and a visiting nurse practitioner supplying the health needs of the camp. The job begins in the pre-camp orientation period and will include explanations to the staff about relevant health related material of a general and specific nature. Individual camper health issues will also be discussed. Opening day is important and involves screening campers as they arrive for any special pre-existing conditions, the collection of all medicines from the campers, and the accumulation and file of all health forms. 

This is only a general description of the duties of the camp nurse and good health and safety have always been a top priority at Timanous. A conscientious, mature and professional camp nurse is vital to maintaining these high standards of quality care. 

Duties

Before camp

• Order supplies for upcoming season. Can be done upon arrival in June.
• Clean out infirmary, arrange and make beds
• Meet with director to go over health care plan 
• Visit health care provider and make arrangements for doctor's visits
• Receive standing orders from camp doctor
• Check ACA standards book for health care regulations and note any discrepancies to director

Pre camp

• Attend pre camp meetings and outline health care plan to staff
• Mention any individual camper's health situation to entire staff if appropriate

Opening day

• Screen campers as they arrive for general health and any preexisting condition
• Receive and label all medications arriving with campers
• Meet with parents about any health concerns 
• Attend opening meeting in the Hall that night

End of Camp

• Pack up all camper meds to be sent home
• Pack up all Infirmary Supplies, putting those that can not freeze in containers to be stored for summer
• Clean the infirmary, send all linens to be cleaned
• Make an inventory list and especially note all maintenance issues that should be done before camp opens the following summer

Daily routine

• Hand out meds at mealtimes
• Treat all medical situations in camp
• Drive trips to the doctor when necessary
• Provide comprehensive first aid kits to camping trip personnel
• Screen all campers returning from camping trips
• Fill out all insurance claim forms for doctor's visits
• Keep a daily log of treatments and illnesses
• The nurse may be anywhere on campus but must carry a two way radio when not near infirmary
• Send out all infirmary laundry on Wednesday
• This should be most of the nurse's duties but some duties may have been inadvertently omitted

Benefits

• Salary: as outlined on contract. 
• Room: The nurse lives in a furnished cottage near the health center. Family members are welcome to stay in the nurse's quarters. 
• Board: All meals are provided in the dinning hall at scheduled hours.
• Laundry: Out one day back the next service provided once a week. 
• Use of all facilities when not in conflict with campers’ use, nurse duty hours, or safety regulations.
• At least one scheduled day off per week beginning after breakfast (9:00AM) and ending before breakfast (8:00AM) the following day. A total of 9 days off allowed. Other arrangements can be made with prior approval of director.
• The two camp nurses will arrange their schedules to provide mutually agreeable time off for both nurses.  Should they not be able to agree, the directors will assist with the schedule.  The only requirement is that there always be a nurse in camp and on duty.   

Qualifications

• Must be at least 21 years of age 
• Licensed RN in State of Maine
1. If not licensed in Maine, submit paperwork to state to obtain Maine license, camp will pay fees and assist with the process. 
• Must submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of work.
• Ability to interact with all age levels.
• Experience in pediatric nursing

Physical Aspects of the Job

• Ability to communicate and work with camper and counselors
• Live and work in a rustic and outside environment
• Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid
• The nurse must be able to quickly reach every place on the camp property.  Much of camp is reachable only  by foot with many areas at least ¼ mile from the infirmary  and reachable only by wooded paths with rocks, roots and up and down hills.
